Elite swimmers possess shorter telomeres than recreationally active controls

چکیده
Elite athletes are reported to possess longer telomeres than their less active counterparts. ACE gene (Insertion/Deletion) polymorphism has been previously associated with elite athletic performance, the deletion (D) variant appearing more frequently in short distance swimmers. Additionally, D allele have a negative effect on telomere length. The aim of this study was investigate length swimmers and its potential association genotype. Telomere measured by real-time quantitative PCR I/D genotypes analysed standard electrophoresis 51 young 56 controls. displayed shorter controls (1.043 ± 0.127 vs 1.128 0.177, p = 0.006). When split sex, only female showed significantly recreationally counterparts (p 0.019). genotype distribution allelic frequency did not differ between controls, or event among only. No observed whole cohort. possessed Our findings suggesting high-level swimming competition and/or training subsequent biological aging, particularly females. However, significant difference does appear be attributed as we report lack

Shoulder Pain in Elite Swimmers
Much research has investigated shoulder pain which inhibits the performance of elite swimmers. An ever increasing understanding of the epidemiology and aetiology of what has been termed 'swimmer's shoulder' has enabled better treatment, rehabilitation and prevention programs to be implemented. This paper reviews the current research relevant to 'swimmer's shoulder' and the methods of treatment ...
متن کاملAerobic cost in elite female adolescent swimmers.
Maximal performance in swimming depends on metabolic power and the economy of swimming. Thus, the energy cost of swimming (economy= VO(2)/V, C(s)) and maximal aerobic power (VO(2max)) in elite young female swimmers (n=10, age: 15.3+/-1.5 years) and their relationships to race times (50-1,000 m) and national ranking were examined. VO(2) increased exponentially with velocity (V), (VO(2)=5.95+(-10...
متن کاملScapular Dyskinesis in Young, Asymptomatic Elite Swimmers
Background Overhead athletes are at a greater risk of developing scapular dyskinesis (SD). Although swimming is considered an overhead sport, information regarding SD in these athletes is scarce. Purpose To determine the prevalence of SD in young, asymptomatic elite swimmers. Study Design Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods A total of 661 asymptomatic elite swimmers were ...
متن کاملShorter telomeres associate with a reduced risk of melanoma development.
Epidemiologic studies have linked shortened telomeres with the development of many cancers. However, recent studies have suggested that longer telomeres may lead to prolonged senescence in melanocytes, providing increased opportunity for malignant transformation. We therefore examined whether shorter prediagnostically measured relative telomere length in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) was as...
متن کاملDoes the cryogenic freezing process cause shorter telomeres?
We have observed evidence of increased telomere shortening in short-term T-lymphocyte cultures following freezing and thawing of the original inoculum obtained by ficoll-paque gradient centrifugation, compared to T-lymphocytes that were cultured immediately without freezing and thawing from the same blood sample from 3 female and 3 male adults. Because freezing may have similar effects on other...
